A Servant's Story

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. - Ephesians 2:10

For nearly 20 years, God had pulled at the heart strings of Dana Watson, pulling him to the Appalachians. "God put it in my heart years ago, but being hard-headed I didn't listen." A Floridian, Dana didn't know much about the Appalachian communities, but knew God had a plan in mind. After years of searching, it was the internet that helped Dana to find a ministry in the Appalachians that was actively serving. Dana participated in a giveaway and was hooked. Knowing his calling, Dana prayed for God's guidance on next steps. With a leap of faith, Servant's Closet was started in 2017. Through a network of churches and volunteers in local groups, Dana was able to find areas that needed help the most - leading to Leslie County, Kentucky and the surrounding areas - some of the most impoverished communities in the nation.

Deep in prayer and knowing that God provides, Dana worked to begin finding ways to help Leslie County more directly. Prayers were answered: God lined up the ministry to organize a Florida church for a mission trip with a nearby county's mission and to host Servant's Closet's first giveaway of over 500 pairs of shoes to over 300 children and families in Leslie County in summer of 2017. Shortly after, the donations flurried - clothes, food, Easter baskets, and much more.

It was through the first mission trip and giveaway that the greatest prayer was answered - a place to serve fully. Invited by the local church that allowed the give away, Servant's Closet was offered a building with small home with which to serve directly in the community. And now, the leap. Dana made the move to Kentucky, focusing on Christ's great commission in the fall of 2018. Commissioned by his home church in Plant City, Florida, Dana is serving full time in the Appalachians, depending on God for all his provisions and plans.

The Servant's Closet

Founded in 2017, The Servant’s Closet is a 501(c)(3), non-profit mission whose goal is to provide various services to the community of Leslie County, Kentucky. According to county health records, 39% of children in Leslie County live in poverty.

The desires of our hearts at The Servant’s Closet is to provide services not only for the children, but the entire community. Serving through projects that help with providing food, home repairs, church and school giveaways, and serving veterans and senior citizens.

God has blessed us with a donated building to run our mission out of, however, we need to get it ready to use! The dream is to have a facility that is able to host groups of volunteers who want to help serve the people in Appalachia. To do this, we need to remodel the donated building. Needed are bunk beds, showers, and a kitchen.

How can you help? First, we would love for you to partner with us in prayer. We trust God has amazing things in store and he has already opened so many doors. Secondly, you could help financially by donating. Your donation is tax deductible and can be made by through the website. Lastly, you can help through your local church to sponsor a giveaway. If you are looking for a way to serve, gather coats, shoes, school supplies, etc. We can arrange for shipments at the appropriate time or even better, would love to help your church to be a more active part of the Great Commission by serving in the field.

We are excited to not only provide tangible commodities and services to the people of Appalachia, but to first and foremost share the love of Jesus Christ by our words and actions.
